What is Himalayan Kriya Yoga?
Himalayan Kriya Yoga is an experiential practice that combines breathwork, movement, sound/mantra, intention and meditation to work with the body's subtle energy and deepen awareness. Central to the practice is the understanding that our energy influences how we think, feel, and move through the world. By working intentionally with energy—moving it, balancing it, and simply becoming more aware of it—we create opportunities to shift habitual patterns of thought and behavior.
At the heart of the practice are kriyas—specific sequences of techniques designed with a particular intention. Some are grounding and calming, while others are energizing, opening, or expansive. Each practice offers an opportunity to explore your inner experience and connect more deeply with yourself.
Our Tradition
Our practices are informed primarily by the teachings of the Sattva Yoga tradition, which draws from the ancient yogic wisdom of the Himalayas and brings together traditional Kriya & Kundalini Yoga, Hatha Yoga, meditation, and other practices in a way that is accessible and relevant to modern life.
If you're familiar with Kundalini Yoga, you may recognize some of the techniques, particularly the use of rhythmic breathing, repeated movements, mantra, and focused awareness. Our practices also incorporate fluid, free movement and traditional Hatha Yoga postures, creating a varied experience that moves between activity and stillness.
What to Expect in Class
Movement is part of the experience, but the emphasis is less on postures and more on the interplay of breath, energy, sound, movement, and awareness.
You'll be guided through combinations of simple movements, breathwork, mantra, meditation, and periods of rest and integrative movement, woven together around a particular theme or intention.
Some parts of the practice may feel gentle and meditative; others may be more active or challenging. There are moments of quiet reflection, rhythmic movement, and the shared experience of chanting or breathing together. No two classes are exactly alike.
You don't need any previous experience with yoga to participate. We offer options and encourage you to move at your own pace, honoring your own experience along the way.
Our hope is that these practices offer a meaningful experience you can take off the mat—that they help us become more aware of our own energy, recognize the patterns that shape our lives, and discover new possibilities in how we meet ourselves and the world around us.
Ultimately, this practice is also an invitation to create space beyond the busyness of the mind and the patterns of everyday life, opening us to a deeper connection with spirit, consciousness, or whatever name we give to that dimension of ourselves.
